Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
