The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
